Russia forum: Are computers in English available where you live?

Postado no Russia forum

  • My HP gave up the ghost this past September. We started looking for a replacement in St Petersburg Russia where we have lived these past nine years. We searched all over the city but nowhere was there one available with English Vista. One option was to buy a laptop with no platform and then add XP but I didn't like the rest of the package.

We bought another HP Presario with Vista Home Premium in Russian. With Googling vocabulary and computer problems I have gotten by, but sometimes on the edge of sanity! With both Russian and computer problems to try to understand it can be maddening.

So, have you had a similar shopping problem where you live? Do you have a foreign language computer? How has all of this affected you?

    Replacing an OS

    Dear Robert,
My guess is, if you can afford to buy the software over the internet and download or get a system disc then there are plenty of computer shops that would replace your Russian OS with what have you on your disc. Or, maybe, ordering by mail from your country (US, UK?) is possible? When I was moving to Japan, I bought a new English computer days before the departure. By the way, a friend of mine in Japan managed to buy an English OS computer, but still with kana on the keyboard and with some glitches. (...and I never trusted HP from my unix days when an HP workstation had been considered inferior to Sun and to SGI)
