Schools in Innsbruck

Posted in Austria forum

Hi I am a primary school teacher and am looking to move to Innsbruck next summer. I don't speak much German so I'm hoping to work in an international school. So far I can only find one-Innsbruck Elementary school. Does anyone know of any others? Or any kindergartens that operate in English? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Lizzy,

I've just seen this post and although it's quite a long time ago now I'm wondering if you ever managed to find any teaching opportunities in Innsbruck? I'm now in a similar position, a primary school teacher moving from the French Alps to Innsbruck next summer and was hoping to find out a bit more about the teaching opportunities. I am also quite keen to start tutoring and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on how much scope there is for both English tutoring and also private tutoring for Anglophone primary aged kids.

Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks, Sharon

Hi there, there are no English schools in Innsbruck. The Austrian school system alolws a "special status" for non native german speakers. Essentially this means that you get 1 year in a german speaking school without being graded. This should give you time to become familiar with the language. Once the year is up, you get assessed and converted to a "normal status" meaning you get tested and evaluated like a native speaker. I looked at a local school for my son, who is 16, but it was too difficult for him to learn the language, miss a year at school, etc. Instead he will go to a british school overseas. If you are adamant in going to a local school, I can recommend the Gymnasium schools. these are like UK Grammar schools and cover all years up to the end of high school. There a 4-5 of these schools in Innsbruck and are used to accommodating foreign students.

    Hi Lizzy,
I am Australian now based in Innsbruck. There are many schools that have English Language courses but only one that is totally in English. I believe you found it. I am looking for an English high school in Innsbruck but unfortunately none exists.
There are also plenty of opportunities for private tutoring.
    Good luck
    Grant.
