Banking account after leaving Belgium

Posted in Belgium forum 03 Nov 2011, 13:35

Hi everyone,

I left Belgium some months ago and returned to Germany and laft my bank account in negative. I would like to know if I can just leave it like that, or if they are going to trace me into Germany to claim for the money. By the way, I tried to de-register from the city hall, but after the third letter I just let it go, so I am still registered as living in Brussels.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

    Close or top-up your account

No you can't leave you bank account like that. Why do you think that? The interest and annual fees they charge you for your account will be deducted from your account resulting in even more debt. Depending on the amount you owe the bank, you will sooner or later get a registered (Eingetragene Brief) letter in your mailbox at your official address which according to you is still in Belgium. If you do not respond to that letter, a bailliff (Gerichtsvollzieher, Gerechtsdeurwaarder, or Huissier de justice) will be appointed. From that moment on cost can rise exponentially, since you are the one who will bear all the bailliff's bills. I am not a lawyer but I wouldn't be surprised if this includes the cost to trace you.

My advice is to close or top-up the account as soon as possible.
