Expat live in Shenzhen and work in Hong Kong?

Posted in China forum 15 May 2010, 15:45

Greetings,

I am considering moving to Shenzhen, Hong Kong or Macau. it looks like it is very expensive to live in Hong Kong and Macau and I was wondering if it is feasible to live on mainland china and commute a few times a week to the islands.

my questions are :
is it difficult to cross the boarder weekly for a foreigner?
what language should I learn?
are there any major drawbacks to living in Shenzhen vs. HK?
are there any things I have not thought of that will pose an issue?

I have traveled extensively world wide, but have not done much travel in china, so I am a bit inexperienced here.

Regards,

Paul

    Hi,Paul.
    I am working in Shenzhen.
I can give you some advice, hope these can help.
You can rent an aparment in Luohu District of Shenzhen, where is close to hongkong.
Living is Shenzhen is very convenient ,there are many foreigners here.
You can learn a little daily Chinese speeches .
The drawbacks maybe the big population of Shenzhen,it is very crowded ,especially weekends .If you need to got o work in the morning ,you have to consider traffic jams.
ANyway Shenzhen is a very nice city ,you will love it .

    why come to China?

I can tell why I WANT To go?

Many reasons, one my son is half chinese so I feel that his cultural heritage is very important for his identity.

But also for my interests, why go to the UK or other western countries? When CHINA is soooo completely different! Everything you say and do will be different and have many different reasons why. Also I love culture, being aussie it's hard to define what Aussie culture is, so why not learn another culture? One that's very old, very full of events and migrations and leaders etc! Also I loved learning asian languages at school, my recent is Hanyu at uni while being an undergrad student! I Loved it! The challange of tones, characters and grammar! And I still struggle with grammar! I'm going to be fluent in CHinese and to be immersed in another culture different to my own! I feel it's very important to learn about other people and their language especially for aussies, where there are many chinese people.

I guess I can't express the excitement I feel when I think about going to GZ for work, but it's been a long time coming for me and a personal goal to live and work and speak another language and culture! I just can't wait! I can't think about it at night because I won't sleep! It's a little crazy but really can't wait!
