Are you sure it is Cyprus?

Posted in Cyprus forum 17 Aug 2010, 09:31

Hey, I used to spend most my vacations in Cyprus and it was awesome, never thought it was dull and lonesome like this! I would move anytime there is I can find a good job, but unfortunately hard to get a job without knowledge of the Greek language.
I am sure you need to try more to stick around, cause it is a lovely easy going place. Enjoy life while you are there.
Cheers..

think it over very well before moving for long term!

Cyprus has a Middle-Eastern mentality more than European, this is obvious! If you don't speak Greek very well, not only English and if you are not highly educated, for lower jobs it is better to forget Cyprus! Even for high educated people, being a foreigner , it is always advisable to find a job elsewhere. If you have your own business there, YES, Cyprus is OK! I was there twice, on holiday and like that it was very pleasant! Really nice! But I never thought to work there, even if was offered it many times, since many years ago when Romania was not in UE and we didn't have so many options as now. If you work for a friend, boyfriend, etc. can be OK, maybe you are treated better. But I never mixed-up work with pleasure. The bottom line is that you should be very careful when you decide to move abroad for long time! Think it over! And if you don't like and fit the picture there, why do't you leave the country instead of feeling sad? I am sorry to say this, but just complaining here doesn't help you at all and unfortunately we cannot change the world. I only hope that you have your passport in your posession, not retained by your employer, some Cypriots do that , they shouldstay in jail or in hell, better! Good-luck! And leave Cyprus if you are not happy there

    Hi Bina,

I partly have the same experience. This is a tight knit community and strangers are welcome, but people don't really feel the need to get to know them. Sometimes I think it's shyness as well.

But the thing is, if you don't enjoy it, why keep trying. Two years definitely is enough time to find out if you like the country or not. Don't make yourself stay. Life's too short!

    Best,
    Thea

Of course, you'll need somewhere to live, but try not to rush into buying a property in Cyprus; after all it is a very important decision. However, if you already know Cyprus well - perhaps you've spent many a happy holiday there - you may already know where you want to buy a property to live in during your retirement. If you don't, it's a good idea to rent a property first so that you can get to know an area before you commit yourself.
