Letting older people to sit in the public transport
Posted in Czech Republic forum 12 Aug 2010, 15:09
While in Czech Republic, I noticed so many times this habit: when all the seats in the public transport are taken and elderly person enters the vehicle, someone always stands up and offers their seat.
So the other day I was in the tram and a lady in her sixties got in. I stood up and sais something like "sednete se", but she started to scream at me something in Czech. I just wanted to be polite and I have no idea what I did wrong!

What you did is really considered polite, and is mostly accepted well. The only reason why the lady could feel offended is that she didn't considered herself that old? Keep trying!

Sarah,
I'm sorry that your experience was so bad. Jirka might be right that she may not considered herself old, but how could you now, that was just rude of her!
But keep trying! ;)
