Hi,
My name is Brittney. I am American and wanting very badly to live abroad. Curious to what the best way to go about this is? Better to get a job first? and what is the best way to do that? Or is it smart to just move and than find a job? Thanks in advance xo

If I were you, I'd join a French university to study French. Then you'll be able to work in France if that is your choice. In either way, you'll be integrating yourself with the language and culture while having a GREAT time. Do you have any prospects? Do you have any Friends in France?
The laws are very strict so don't plan on going there expecting to find work. I tried it with my visitors visa and I was shot down each time. They all told me to come back as a student. Hmmm
As for me, I am looking to move there myself. I've studied French in Strasbourg & Toulouse and I've lived in France for a total of 2 yrs. It was a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've made wonderful friends and although I am back in the states, I haven't stopped thinking of my times abroad.
I signed up for more French classes in Toulouse and I just received my authorization to come back (plan B). Yay!! However, I aim to work there full time. To to this, I'll try to get the skills and talents visa that will allow me to work for any employer according to my profession (plan A). I'll do the paper work for the skills and talents visa at the end of this June.
If you are looking at the school option, look at "rolling admission" options in the larger cities like Toulouse, Bordeaux, Lion....
That's all for now. Feel free to reply.

Hi Baber,
I just want a different quality of life. Finding a job shouldn't be that hard since I program computers. I love old cultures and traditions that are still going on strong. The French culture and language does something do the visitors that....lol The longer you live there the more you think about it. lol I've visited many other countries but I feel more at home in France.

move to France

Hi Brittney.
How are you doing?
The best and cheapest way to move to France should be in your case as a student. The public schools or colleges are free, the only amount you have to pay is a tiny fee (between 300 and 600€) , than you could get access to the public health insurance, some state aids for a rent. Once settled here, you can apply for a part time job or just to be an English tutor.
Don't hesitate to ask me if you need more information.sincerely

But I am super swamped with my own projects. The best thing I would suggest is to find other people who have what you want to do. I am unsure of the path I'll take but one way or another, I'll get there.
For example, if you want to move to Spain, learn Spanish..... by learning Spanish (or any other language) you'll come in contact with people who can help. You'll need to focus on one thing and move towards that.
Good luck,

Hi Nalaka,
I don't think you have to worry too much about the cost of universities in France. They are usually somewhere between 300 and 500 euros per year. As for finding a university, look into www.campusfrance.org You should be able to find what you like from that. If you just want to work in France, look into taking up French language courses in a university of your choice. With that, you'll have the ability to work part time until you find an employer willing to hire you.
Ciao,

You should be a "shoe in" if you were to apply for the compétences et talents visa....

Research that visa, you should be able to find lots of resources on the net.

I don't think you can switch your visa like that. I was a tourist for 2 years and I tried to switch my tourist visa to a work visa and it was impossible. lol I did find that the French authorities were sympathetic to my 'pain' that they allowed me to extend my stay a few months until I found a job. Sadly, a family emergency called me back home so I wasn't able to see the extension through. I say come back as a student that wants to learn French. It is very important to sign up in a university to get this status... otherwise they'll give you a tourist visa. Then you'll be in the same boat as me. If I am not mistaken, I believe that you will need to apply for this visa in your home country.
You'll need about 600-800 euros per month depending on the town you live in. I suggest you pick a less expensive town just to make your money last (not Paris...lol). Get a letter from a person that states they will help you out with funds even if you do have enough funds.
I hope that helps,
Chris -
Thanks Chris

Hey Nalaka,
I've lived in France for 2 years and I've kept up with the language ever since. I also have documentation to prove my language skills. lol That documentation is so valuable. It can just about open any door towards your goal of coming to France. I'll be going to the Mirail University in Toulouse. It's not a very good or safe university. It's just that they seem to be the only 'official' university in the area that I can go to take French courses.
As I mentioned before, your route is easier if you directly apply for the competence et talents visa. You don't have to go this route that I am taking. As for facebook, sorry but only allow family and friends that I physically met on my account. You understand...
Ciao,

Hi Nalaka,
I wish you good luk? but I have one question for you: Are you studying French? If not, I think it should be one of your primary concerns. Of course, there are many ways to come here, but don't make high expectations if you don't speak and write French, it could be not easy to get a decent job.
Sincerely
Hakim
