    Germany is quite racist

posted by  Chrissy Thomas in Germany forum

I am an African American, living in Germany as an exchange student. Germany reminds me of the rural south of America. In the southern states, separatist groups like the KKK and Neo Nazis are quite popular in small towns. In Germany, these groups (at least where I am in the West) seem to be hidden but everyday i encounter racism or strange reactions. People stare a LOT! People make racist comments about you. I was walking in the park alone and three guys yelled horrible things at me about being from Africa ect.
I always get checked for tickets on the bus or tram. No one else on the bus or tram gets checked but me. I always get followed in stores. Customer services sucks in Germany but I always have a special associate following me around. It's really crazy. I feel like i stepped back in time in 1950 in America. there are some good people here who have decided on their own that they aren't racist. There aren't enough good people though and I don't like it here.
