I know that maybe I think too high of Germans. It comes from childhood I think.

Growing up in Spain I remember walking back home from school and waiting at pedestrians crossing because Spaniards, they don't stop, so back then, while I was waiting there I used to look at the car plates and when I saw one with German plates, well, that made my day!. I knew that one would stop and I would be able to be on my way again.

It may sound stupid, but that made me like Germans already back then. And of course in Spain you always heard the adults say how everything made in Germany was great, and how Germans were so smart, and how nobody built anything like the Germans did and blah blah blah. If there was some discussion about how good or bad something was and somebody said, well it's made in Germany, that was the end of it. It was good.

That has influenced of course my view of them. Now I know that not every German is going to be super smart or super polite, but growing up like that, something remains. I remember when last summer they had the problem with the air conditioning in the trains, I was a bit in shock, like, what? something doesn't work in Germany? it can't be.

Add to that my good experiences with Germans and yes, you are right, I think I may glorify them too much.

that's why it's hard for me to process the things I'm reading here. I believe you, but at the same time, I wonder if you make it worse than it is.

One thing is for sure, I need to try to save money and learn German, because if I finally don't like it, I need to come back to the US and that requires money :-(

Again, I know the Germany is not perfect or anything like that, and the Germany will have smart and dumb Germans, but something remains from childhood.

Something else that you heard adults say sometimes when something got messed us was "that would never happen in Germany". :-)
