buy old house
Posted in Greece forum 07 Jul 2010, 22:22
Hi there,
We are planning to move over from holland to greece as soon as some
possibilities come along. We are planning to live somewhere in the area
of katarina (40 miles southwest from thessaloniki). End of next motnh we
will travel to greece for a holiday. Is there someone who can inform us
if buying an old house with +/- 2000 sq metres of ground with an old house
or just the ground is better (practically/financialy?)
We have our own idea of building a house, how realistic and timeconsuming
is it to get the plans throught officials.
-- we can build / rebuild ourselves --
Would appreciate some reply's
greetzzzz paul

Why buy? what happens if you change your mind?
Building a house without knowing the way Greece is functioning is not a very nice Idea.If you were to buy a house and remodel it it will be much easier. -

Hello Christos,
Thanks for your answer.
The way we are going for it is going to greece for at least 1 month next year, the year after at least 2 months, and the following year we will sell/or rent our house out
for at least one year. In this year we will be in Greece for more than 6-7 months.
In this period we will rent a house in greece, and it will be also in this year that we will
decide if my family is up for the final move. We believe it is better to disconnect slower from our present situation as to avoid 'overrunning' it all.
Besides that I am going to set up a business which is internationally oriented which
looking at the business is not location dependent, so i can run things from anyware.
It believe it is the best thing that we are not dependend on finding a job in greece,
for, so i've read can be hard for foreigners.
We do have greek friends living in Naoussa which isn't quite far from the place we are heading for. After renting a year or so, and we still like it, we would love to build (or remodel as your refered) a house.
Do you have any idea which greek websites are best for searching houses?
Regards, paul -

Hi Paul,
Take a look to www.aegeanhouse.gr and maybe we can help you if you could be more clear about the place you want to be the house, the type of the house and the value you want to pay for this.
You can find old house in such a plot you describe in your post and i think that is a good idea to rent it (we can help with this also) the time you will be far of Greece.

Hi there,
Thank you all for replying, for information is very useful, great! We are kind of worried now if it would be a good plan to make a next move now due
to the present situation in Greece.
It is sure that we want to go, the timing however is now of more concern.
I think we will come to Greece in a few months to visit our friends there in Naoussa and then we
can talk to some people and learn how everything is running at this time.I am sure that I will receive more honest details then our newspapaers and TV is presenting.
Thank you all for replying, I will certainly send you a personal post once there is more clearity.
greetings paul
