Moving to Luxembourg
Posted in Luxembourg forum 17 Dec 2011, 08:31
Hi there,
evaluating a job proposal which requires to move family to Luxembourg, I'm trying to gather some direct information from people leaving there, so I'm asking everybody here for some help:
- How is cost of leaving compared to Italy (Rome), generally; if I'm earning 3000euros how much i should get there to make it the same?
- Is there any reliable site in the web to send me to check the amount of income tax to be paid, or any good contact to do the math?
- Do you need an extra medical insurance to cover all expenses?
- It's easy to get access to international school/european school having a kid to send to school who doesn't speak engl/french?
Sorry for throwing question on the board but I'm trying to build a complete picture, thanks a lot for any answer/help and please let me know if I can help you out somehow in the same .......
Cheers

Hello, just read your request, have only been herere 4 months but I can tell you how I see it, though I dont know cost of living in Italy, maybe someone will tell you that; I used to live in France and for me life is a bit cheaper here...
I suppose you will rent a flat/ house so i suggest you have a look at prices on www.athome.lu- just to get an idea, then you can use any other source or the people offering you a job might get you someone to help with this, that is quite handy- prices depend obviously on whether you want to live in town or outskirts, house with garden or flat etcTaxes are low, and your kid will get some money just for the fact of being a resident, that depends on your earnings, I dont know how much they get... I was told taxes are 10% plus then you pay the social charges...so consider at leat 25% of your monthly wages gone, but will depend on your wages, the website is www.impotsdirects.public.lu
I was considering getting extra medical insurance but my experience is that social security pays:
- doctors bills, you pay around 10%
- Pills etc at the chemist are a bit expensive- at leat the ones doctors tell you buy
so all in all not sure it is worth it, I have been told that if you have a baby then you need this extra as otherwise becomes costly, but no experience yetIf the job offer is within European institutions, then you have access to European school on your kid's native language, but if not, depends on his age, and then I can not help- I know there is a school in English I supppose it is possible to attend, then public schools are in Luxembourgish from 4...then changes to French I think
I probably have not helped you that much! just wanted to give you some info
Good luck- by the way there is a very big italian community here
