As for UNITEC - google Chinese student Linda Tang. She was made to leave her final year of a degree in nursing because her tutors' didn't like her accent'. And Dunedin has just suffered its worst weekend of street rioting for years after the UNDIE 500 rally.
Safe? It's no different from any other country so if you do decide to study there make sure you chose a reputable college with an international reputation, don't get ripped off over the fees and be aware of your personal safety at all times.
