Why does Singapore need compulsory national service?

I was wondering, why Singapore despite its size needs one of the most advanced military forces in East Asia? What do you think, is it nowadays still necessary to have two-year compulsory National Service, which every able-bodied male (both Singapore citizen and permanent resident) has to undertake? What are your opinions on that?
