living in Seoul, South Korea

Hi all,

I am in advanced discussions for accepting a position with a S.Korean Electronics major for a position in Seoul, S. Korea. I'd like to know a few things, and any help is hugely appreciated!

1. What would be the average/median salaries in advanced tech/R&D sector in Seoul, S. Korea? I ask so that I can put the package offered to me in perspective. If you take US Dollar as a reference (as I believe it is for international hires) what would be the salary for a guy with a Masters Degree from a reputed school and with 3+ years of work ex in a relevant domain?

2. What would be the cost of living like in Seoul? Main would be accommodation, and cost of food/toiletries/commute/leisure. I understand cost of living depends a LOT on your lifestyle, but some rough ballpark figures would be hugely appreciated?

3. How much would I be able to save after the above expenses? I need to send some money back home to India (to cover some bills/mortgage on my home).

4. What's the work culture like? I've heard that long hours are really common. Mind you, nothing against working hard, but I believe that work hard -- and work smart, more importantly -- where it's required. Not in just logging hours to claim overtime benefits/whatever.

5. How's the scene like for medical practitioners (immigrants) in S.Korea? My fiancee will be moving with me sometime later (if we decide to go ahead with this decision) and I'm gonna take up this offer only if we can be sure to have something worked out for her!

Appreciate your help a lot! Thanks in advance! :)

Ciao,
Amit
