Is it impossible to be a vegetarian in Spain?

Posted in Spain forum 24 Aug 2010, 15:42

Hi all,

I spend my summer here in Spain in Almeria and of course I am trying to discover as much about Spanish culture as possible. I love to discover local cuisine, but everytime I go out to restaurant it seems impossible to order good vegetarian food. Everything here seems to have chorizo inside and I am sick of eating tortilla de patatas! Any vegetarians living in Spain having the same problem?

it's difficult indeed but you can manage it

If you go to traditional bars or restaurants you ill not have lots of choice in vegetarian food. Traditional kitchen in spain is meat or fish.
Sometimes people even don't understand what its about to be vegetarian o they do not really classify.. "Oh its not meat, just a little bit of bacon", or they say "Chicken is no meat..."

Well, hope you eat fish at least, no fish, no meat sometimes you must decide between "Tortilla de patatas", "Ensaladilla rusa", "Patatas fritas" or "Ensalada (sin)"... no hay mucho más en la cocina traicional....
PERO - durante todos los años aqui notaba que cada vez mas restaurantes ofrecen comida vegetariana (a veces con jamón, ojo!) e incluso cada vez más personas en españa dejan de comer carne.
O Sorry. I switched to spanisch...
I just wanted to say: Things go better, not only in Barcelona or Madrid you find good vegetarian restaurants. And very soon there will be vegetarians in the villages too ... (espero mucho). You are just one of a million and honest vegetarians. The more we get, the more the have to offer us. don't they?

    Hi dear Laura C,
I do believe that it is not impossible. If someone eat only veg. food, for sure it is possible to manage it.
But one thing which is difficult for me to understand is, I wanted to talk to somebody in Valevcian`s city hall, but unfortunately could not find a person who could speak English! Because I wanted & still want to do that is to run a non profit project nearby Valencia to help the people (women, children students &…).
So I appreciate it if you could kindly help me in this regard.
Be sure that one day I reward your kindness in a way or the other.
    Waiting your kind reply.

Hi all of you “living in Valencia”,
One thing which is difficult for me to understand is, “how it can be that in a great city like Valencia (Valencia’s city hall) in the Great Spain” I wanted to talk to in English to somebody in Valencia’s city hall, but unfortunately could not find a person who could speak English! Because I wanted & still want to do that is to run a non profit project nearby Valencia to help the people (women, children students &…).
So I appreciate it if someone could kindly help me in this regard.
