    Basel vs. Vienna?

    Hi All,

I currently live in Vienna. I've been here for over a year.

I'm thinking about relocating to Basel to work for a large, multi-national company. I know very little German, but the company's working language is English.

I be very interested in anyone's person views about the relative pros and cons of the two cities.

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

I left Vienna for Basel 1 month Ago.My company offered me a position here.

Pros is that you can/should expect to get significantly higher wage in Basel compared to Vienna. If you don't get this it is probably not worth moving, at least from an economical point of view. Basel (And ch in general) is extremely expensive. You can forget to go out for dinner as often as you did in Vienna, unless you are ready to pay 15 euros for a salad.

Rents are also very high: Lower in Basel City and higher in Basel Land: but in Basel City you'll have to pay less taxes than in Basel Land, even if this all depends very much on your incom level. In Vienna I was living in Schottenring but on the 2nd district side, and I was paying 700/750 euros per month for a 75 SM flat.Consider in Basel an increase of 60% for a comparable flat.

Basel is much smaller than Vienna, it is about 1 fith of Vienna. So don't expect the big metropolis. But if you like nature/sport you will enjoiy also Basel.

Maybe it is early for me to say, but unless it is economically really advantageus, I wouldn't leave Vienna: is more beautiful, bigger, cheaper and people a more friendly.

I hope I helped you a bit. Cheers
