United Kingdom forum: I disagree with the marriage visa age requirement being raised to 21...who else agrees?

  • In November 2008, the age for a marriage visa increased from 18 to 21 in a bid to stop forced marriages but I think it will be unsuccessful due to the fact that it will only stop people in a forced marriage from coming to the UK, not stop the act itself. I also think its against the human rights of those people under the age of 21 who have entered into a marriage of consent who want to settle permanently in the UK. Surely when a marriage is clearly genuine and not forced, then this law should not apply.
It also only applies to people whose spouse is from outside the European Union. This age requirement seems ridiculous to me. I can comprehend the intention of this law but it is affecting many people under the age of 21 who have entered into a marriage of consent. I would like the age to be returned to 18 again, but with tighter restrictions on determining whether a marriage is genuine or not.
