forum Londres: Cost of living in London

Publié dans le forum Londres

  • Hello, I'm thinking about spending a semester in London.
Can anybody tell me how much I have to pay per month for living there? Including a little room in a shared apartment, food, tickets for the tube and all the other stuff?

    Thank you
    Charlotte

    London is expensive.

A room in a shared house can be cheaper.

    See www.gumtree.com/london

You will pay 'council tax' on top of your rent.

The Tube is zoned, Zone1 in the center then Zone 2, etc. I ive in Zone 2, a 4 mile return journey into Zone 1 is £8.00

There is a prepay card called 'Oyster' for London's Transport which works on buses and tubes, and some trains, it reduces prices by around 30%. There are plenty of buses, but they are slow, and often crowded.

Bicycling is good in London, with cycle lanes everywhere.

Eating out is expensive, a meal for two will rarely cost less than £20.00 more with wine and the quality is variable.

The cost of energy has gone up by 50% in the last two years, and heating can be expensive too.

The center of London is very nice, but most of the rest is now very squalid, crowded and dirty.

If you can cook and don't go out much it's possible to live for about the same price as in Paris, though.

    Thanks Sue

Wow, that sounds quite expensive... I'll have reconsider that. Maybe a smaller city in Great Britain would do, too...?!

    City suggestions?

There are a few places you could try. Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle...these places all have the big city atmosphere without the high prices of London. Is it only England you want to go to? How about Edinburgh up in Scotland? It's a beautifull city!!

  • So these ones are nice, too? Cause I only heard of London being THE city to live in Great Britain, expensive but "totally cool". But I'll consider Liverpool or Manchester, too.

Hmm Scotland...actually I never thought about it! But why not...the people up there speak normal English, don't they? I mean without a weird accent or something, that would make them hard to understand?
