28 Sep 2009, 23:03Canadian in DESPERATE need of some basic living tips in Madrid...Hi there, so I am totally confused with "what to do" in any logical order:
1) Going to get my NIE done in November 2009, it's been arranged. I don't think I will need any pre-tips. My company made the appointment for me.
2) I am going tomorrow for my Social security number (but I have no certificate of official residence here in Spain..I believe it's called an empu...., but I can't remember the name)...so this question is also split into two questions. Where, how do I get this residence certificate...the empu.....don't know the name? Hope it's not needed for when I go to the Tesoreria General de la Seguridad Social
3) I need to set up a bank account...ummmm, where do I go? What bank is the best? What would be the best bank that would require the least amount of documentation to open an account? Keep in mind #1 and #2....things which I do not have yet. My Spanish is also intermediate so it would be great to find a bank where maybe someone would speak English. (I live near Sol).
side note: I have an EU passport maybe it could make all of the above a bit easier?
4) I have been hired by an English School here. They want me to be autonomo. Are they serious? Out of my monthly paycheque I have to pay 250 Euros a month? What if you only get slightly more than 250 Euros a month? sheesh
Or is it that at the end of the tax year, I pay up all in one sum...250 euros a month. Either way, I lose money.
I lose 35% of my pay in a month!! But the manager said she's willing to pay me in "B" until I get all my documentation done....have NO IDEA what she meant by that.
5) Anyone know how to create contacts for private tutoring? I need to advertise myself...did so on Segundamano, on announcements in the library, through word of mouth, but I need more hours. Any tips?
6) Last, HOW CAN PEOPLE GET PAID on the 4th of 5th of the month? In Canada we get our paycheque on the last day of the month, ergo rent can be paid on the same day...this is normal?
Any kind, saintly, amazing expat who could inform me about these things...my god, I would take you out for drinks (on me), cause I am feeling so lost right now!!

29 Sep 2009, 20:212) I think you are talking about 'empadronamiento' - this needs to be done at the town hall, and you will probably need to get the person who is the 'head' of the household (ie if you are subletting, the person who has done this for themselves) to sign a form. For the Seguridad Social, you used to be able to do this with a passport, but I think they may now be asking for a NIE before you can get it. Only solution is to go and ask at the office.
3) Most banks will open a non-residents account. I can't recommend them much, but as a short-term OK - Caixa Galicia have an office in Serrano where I think they speak English. Someone has mentioned to me that Sabedell have an international dept and the website in English for online banking.
4) the 250 as an autonomo is social security, not income tax, which you would normally put a % reduction when you invoice the employer, then make a yearly return. You might well want to get a professional to look after the paperwork if you do this as you need to make quarterly returns for IVA and do a yearly return for tax (IRPF)
B means 'black', ie cash in hand no tax.
5) you can try in the classifieds on here
6) welcome to Spain - either negotiate it out with employer and/or landlord, save up, panic, or run!
Good luck!

Ok Simon, it is what it is...by the sounds of it...a lot of running around, but do-able. I will take your advice, negotiate with my employer and look into Caixa Galicia!!
