Duitsland forum: How can my american BF live with me in germany?

  • Hi!

I just have a question. My boyfriend and I have been together for 3.5 years (I'm Dutch, he's American) We've been doing the long distance thing for a while and now we want to be together-together. Me moving to America is not an option (since they have ridiculous rules and regulations). I don't want to move back to The Netherlands, I like it here. So germany it is.

Does anyone here know what the rules are in germany so that we can live together and that he can stay here legally? I don't think we can get married in germany since they only have the civil partnership for gay people. I think that getting married in The Netherlands still makes it a civil partnership in germany and I don't know if that is enough to have him stay here with me.

Maybe being boyfriends is enough already or just being able to support him while he lives here, until he finds a job. I can't find any information on this subject for the life of me.

If we can't get this figured out he has to move back to America within the next 18 days.

I'm hoping that there are some people here with a similar issue or people who have some more information about this.

    Thanks!

    Alex.

  • Hi Alex,

there is no marriage between men in Germany, but there is something called an "eingetragene Lebensgemeinschaft" (which I guess is like a civil partnerhip). In theory, this should give you the same rights as a marriage.

In any case - if you partner gets a residency/work permit for the Netherlands this should also be valid for Germany as far as I know.

    Good luck!

    Dan
