New to Cape Town

Veröffentlicht in Kapstadt Forum

Hey everyone…

I’m arriving in Cape Town on the 23rd February. I’m hoping to meet nice people. Does anyone know of good places to meet new people in CT? Anyone interested in making a new friend? :)

I need to find a flat share as soon as possible and I have no idea how to go about doing it, except from Gumtree. Any ideas? I'm also looking for a job in the not for profit sector. Any tips? All help greatly appreciated!

A bit about me: I’m 30 and Portuguese but have lived overseas most of my life. I speak French, English and Portuguese fluently and am working as a freelance translator at the moment. I want to make the most of South Africa but I’d like to have some company :)

Look forward to hearing from some of you.

Thanks!
Diana.

    Hola Pedro,

I first came to live in Cape Town in January 2008 because I followed my south african boyfriend here (I met him in London). Then last December we broke up so I left. But after a couple of month I decided to come back on my own!

I came back because in less than a year I fell in love with this place :) It is the most beautiful city I have lived in (and I have lived in quite a few!) and the people are friendly and diverse (although I'm having to make new friends because the only people I know are my ex's friends and family!).

But when I first arrived I hated it actually... because of what you mention about the tv saying it is so dangerous!! I was too scared of the crime and it made me unhappy. But in fact it was all mainly in my head, now I live almost as if I was in any european city. I am aware and careful of course but I find Cape Town safe (none of this applies to Johannesburg by the way!).

As far as jobs go I just thought that with the economic crisis in Europe I am better off here where things aren't as bad. I don't know if I'm right about that though... What do you do for work? I found work as a freelance translator here last year quite easily.

I guess I would say if it's something you want to do then you should try it and see how it goes. That's what I'm doing! Maybe you could come on a holiday and then stay if you like it?

If you have any more questions you can always ask me! And if you do decide to come then I will be happy to help you settle down in any way that I can :)

    Diana.
