I just don't get it! Many people I know that are living abroad constantly complain how hard it is to meet people from the country they moved to. But at the same time, they only meet up with people from their home country and instantly create their own "national circle" once they move abroad. How on earth do they expect to meet nationals then?

Hi Jose, unfortunately this is a little bit of a "chicken and egg" problem: If you don't meet native speakers because you don't speak the language, you won't practice that language and get better at it...
From my experience the only way to break this circle is to just go for it and speak whatever you can. And in fact most people will understand if you don't speak their language properly at the beginning..

Well - for one part - it's simply easier to meet people with your same background. Also, if you live in a country like Germany and don't speak any German, you really hit the language barrier. And on top of that most Germans don't seem to be interested in foreigner, except for flirting with them (at least what they call flirting).

moving abroad

Hi Anne! This is just SO right - and it happens with all nationalities. Most Latin-Americans abroad stick to their own community as well, but then complain how "cold" the Europeans are (of course they never got to know them in the first place).
