To avoid a cost-explosion during the cable laying, there must be seabed surveys before the installation. These surveys combine different methods to find out about the ground conditions, so it is possible to choose the right tools to bury the cables. Some survey companies specialise in looking for unexploded munitions from World War 2, which are also called UXOs.
It is equally important to choose the right trenching tools and laying methods, to bury the cables in the sea ground. Many of these tools come from the oil and gas or telco industries, and they are not really adjusted to power cables. Other tools may cause damages and thus cause unexpected and unwanted cost.
