How difficult is learning Russian?

How long does it take to get a basic knowledge of the Russian language? Is it very hard to learn (especially the writing)?

  I think Russian is not that bad =) It took one year for my boss to learn basic Russian, I'd even say Intermediate Russian. Now we can communicate in my native language =)

  yuo could say it has become a hobby, i am very much challenged by the language - the grammar and the communication styles, i know i complain most of the time about it being a very difficult language to learn but so far 4 months or so into the lessons and i am still coming back for more...

  yeah i try to get as much practice as i can .. i also train myself by listening to russian music =)

  only learning is not enough,you must practice also... Practice in front of mirror.It sounds funny but good enough to gain confidence.

  hey guys, i started learning the russian language like several months back and it is quite hard, but i have grown to love the language (yes even if i dont understand squat most of the time!) and it is quite a challenge... =) 5 to 10 years? haha maybe morrrreee!

  Learning Russian is not so difficult.I lived in Russia for four years.I did not attend language classes.I preferred to learn by just talking to people.Other things that helped me were watching the typical kind programs we see everyday on channels around the world,reading news papers.I think if I can learn Russian language anyone other can also do.
