An Evening with Sona Jobarteh

For the first time in nearly four years, internationally acclaimed instrumentalist and vocalist Sona Jobarteh will perform in the Pelican State. A living archive of the Gambian people, Jobarteh is a master player of the Kora, a 21-string instrument originating in West Africa. The artist is the first professional female Kora virtuoso to come from any of the West African Griot dynasties.

The performance, An Evening with Sona Jobarteh, will take place at the Manship Theatre at the Shaw Center for the Arts in Baton Rouge on March 14th at 7:30PM. The show features her signature sound, seamlessly blending traditional music, blues, and Afropop, all while singing in her native languages. Tickets start at $30.00 and are available directly from the Manship Theatre website. The event is part of a string of appearances for the artist, who will also be performing upcoming shows in Chicago, Atlanta, New York and Philadelphia.

Jobarteh started training on the Kora as a young child, eventually mastering the instrument and going on to touch audiences from all backgrounds and cultures around the world. She has performed on some of the most coveted stages around the world including Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles and the Symphony Space in New York City.

In addition to performing, Jobarteh is a skilled composer, having trained formally at the Purcell School of Music and the Royal College of Music.
