new immigrant

Hi I want to move with family to australia. Currently we hold a permanent
visa till feb 2009(skilled migrant category). Does the visa get extended once we land before the expiry date. What are the procedure to renew
once I enter. Shall I work in australia after the expiry date?

Also I have a new passport. The visa is in old passport. Is it possible
to transfer the visa from old to new by overseas australian embassies.

    I am also looking answer for the same questions as a Permenent visa holder under skilled migration catagory, visa expires on dec.2011, and planning to go alone to australia on aug.09 to find a job over there and then take fmly.
