What do you like or hate most about the Czechs?

Posted in Czech Republic forum

I'm sure there are some prejudices about people from Czech Republic... Can you spot some common characteristics or behaviour that you like or hate about Czechs? I'm interested in what foreigners think of us :-)

And please, don't say just the clichees about beer drinking :-)

    Shameless czech women

posted by  Vera m in Czech Republic forum

Prague international airport is place of bunch of shameless czech gate workers women , horrible rude uncivilized airport ever. I flew on the 21 st of July by flight number SU 2011, by Aerolfot, when i arrived in the gate 23 just before the boarding the plane, there were 4-5 women checking passengers' tickets. I had 3 items like laptop , cabin size luggage and small bagpack. I was using my small backpack as my handbag, inside there were my valuable suveners and my expensive cellphone, toothbrush etc very light few items. Blonde czech woman who tied her hair and another czech woman with black hair demanded me to leave my bagpack there and threatened me if i dont leave my bagpack they will not board me and plane will fly in few minutes or to pay 100 euro for my bagpack. Unfortunately i dont have 100 euro , and then under their demand, i gave my bagpack to them.
After 2 days, i called them to tell my friends in Czech Republic will come to the vaclav havel airport to get my bagpack. Shamelelssly they said they didnt take my bagpack so they dont know where my bagpack is. After i continuesly wrote them and argued, they told me that "yes it is true that we took your bagpack but we dont have your bagpack now". Until now they are not giving me back my bagpack with my cellphone. On their finally email , they told me " please be kind and dont ask your bagpack from us and dont send your friends to collect your bagpack, bcz we dont have your bagpack anymore with us.
It is very very weird situation. I want to know what they have done with my bagpack and especially with my cellphone.
Actually from the first, they were looking very weird , after i left my bagpack i noticed some kind of joys appeared on their faces, they were just looking like beasts to attack to the prey ( my left bagpack). They seemed they already accustomed to get passenegers items and divide valuable things and throw rest ones into the rubbish. On the same day, when i reached Shermetoyva airport , i asked gate managers abt this case , they were horrified by this story and said it is shocking, and also said according to airline rule, those czech gate women workers must give it to the lost and found department, they must not use items of passengers and they must not throw it to the rubbish bin. It is airline rule.
It is so shameless that those czech women dont care Czech Republic fame and stole passengers' item without giving it to the related department and throw it to the rubbish bin. How can i get back at leas my cellphone from those shameless czech women??

Though I've been more in touch with my Palestinian side and I am very Arab and expressive, I am actually half Czech and have had the opportunity to visit Czech Republic. The thing that I apprecite most about the Czech people is that they keep it real. They smile only when they are happy, and not to show off their teeth. They have a stern demeanor but they will still make you laugh because they are very witty and save humor for when it counts.

The thing I least like is the Czech lack of affection as compared to Mediterranean folk. As half Arab, my father's side would always hug me and kiss me and tell me they love me, but my Czech mother and grandfather would be less warm, but still more warm than most of the Anglo Americans I grew up around. As I got older, I realized that Czech people are just as loving, just more reserved of their emotions, which is common of Slavic people. They are not like Western Europeans who have no emotions.

    Salut,

Well, I've allways wondered about the fonetic aspect of our strange language. As it's my mother tongue, I've used to it,... But once, there were visitors from other countries (some school project), and I asked them, what our language sound them like. Heh, I was expecting something like funny, slow, etc., but the answer was "something between Russian and German". I don't mind this answer, actually i like it :-) in my opinion it's an exact description, as we are slovanians (and have some shared basics with Russian language) together with beeing next to 2 german speaking countries (and maybe even more important might be the past with Habsburgs in our "goverment" ).

Or how does it sound to you? :-p

    Kto-to kak to

I don't think you are mistaken I think you are new here. For example, Prague is a complete different place from Brno. Tourism has a great influence over the capital city and their people do speak English, everyone of em. Me I went to Brno, and I'm living here since September. It's important to remember that CR haven't been an open country for so long but since 89 when communism ended. I'm teaching French to an engineer who said to me wife and him have never travelled around the world before 89. My friend's parents are afraid of even going anywhere as they mostly react violently to any other culture. Bit I was very surprise when waitresses older than 35years old spoke English. It's important to know that student language skills are mostly tested if they want to attend superior studies or certain faculties. I'm living at the dorms and the guys of my age but studying forestry do not talk any other language. The same average guy but in business economics speaks perfect English. My point is: there are differences among individuals and communism did slowed down the whole country but in ten years, our generation is rather going pretty well.

About people's faces in the bus. I don't really know what makes react in a upset-like way. No one is forced to smile haha or even to say hi or be nice. Just sit there, and hop off. Get up if a granny wants to sit. Otherwise why would you have them do? I mean in Ll the countries I've been, it's quite the same everywhere. Worse in Finland though

Well, what is really a problem is that in general people don't speak English or any other foreign language. That is strange, for this country is in the middle of Europe having lots of tourists. It's difficult to ask direction, buy something in a shop, even in tourist districts. Waiters only speak Czech and when they speak English (or think that they are doing so) it is a problem to make anything out because of bad pronunciation.
Another shocking thing is the habit of blowing nose loudly in public, some people say it is normal in Czech culture, but it took me some time to get used to it.
Czecks are polite but seem indifferent and negatively ironic. When you see them in the street or in trasport there are absent minded smiles on their faces, and for a newcomer it may seem that they have smoked something illegal (if drugs are illegal there) and went to the world of dreams... But soon after I noticed this strange expression on my face too (becoming Czech probably).
    Smoking is allowed everywhere.
If you see a bearded guy with long hair be sure he is Czeck, girls also wear long and often messy hair.

    Hi everyone,
I've been thrice in Czech Republic, and my first Czech friends were exchange students in France. They gave me a very good impressions about Czech Republic and Czechs. Before that, I've been to Finland, UK, Hungary, Slovakia and so on and frankly, what I don't like about Czechs are the expectations they have about the color of your skin. They don't mean it at all, that's why i keep coming back. but the other day, i've been offered to teach hiphop whereas I've never ever danced before but few minutes later, another person came and revealed it was just about my skin: they wanted a black person as an advertisement for their courses and that is not the first time such a thing happens... I take it with humor because it's so inappropriate hahhaha and i know it's not mean at all but at some point, when people expect something you don't have, it's quite frustrating for everyone. instead of "can you do that?", i'd rather be asked "what can you do"

Otherwise, Czech Republic is definitely a great place to be! Way better than Finland! people are polite and nice if you talk to them. I've asked my way many times, even though they don't speak english (:
