What do you like / hate most about the French?

Posted in France forum

As a French girl myself, I'm interested in what people from other countries think about us ;)

So: What do you like (or hate) most about French people?

yes i am agree with Charlote, i am living here in France almost 2 years now, and specially in the small city that i live here clermont-ferrand the people are less of manners, teenagers act like a king of the road, screaming around, and one time i seeing bounce of teenagers in the swimming pool they had a fighting with a one lady with a baby on her hand, just because a little things the teenagers become very rude n event she dare to beat that lady screaming n put her finger on the face of the lady...crazyy things ever seen. if we go to the supermarket u can imagine the cashier they act like a they didn't get pay for working there, mostly old women they keeping screaming each other with other cashier during her job like they act that shop are belongs to their father, i found some are normal but very rarely..like in mc donals or quick fast food here, they service are really suck...one time they forget to give us the drink and when we asked they not event say sorry for that..they keep on screaming and smoking around in the client area like they act they should be nice in front of many customer that has many kids around there...i found after all here my experiences in france most of the people are arrogant, they dont like to see others better than them, jealousy, this case i found more with the girls.. maybe case like this are not so common in a city like paris, or any other tourist city maybe because they people are get use to be in a environment with tourist from many country..but for small city like the city i live now...ohh my God...and all the things Charlote write above are exactly true happen in here..i ve been in the other country such a swiss, germany and i found their people are damn nice...i ve been in the small city in germany they are very niceeee they event willing to help me carrying my bag when i am in a train station with big bag and they just offering me a help and not happen just one time, its happen a lot of times not only a guy but women also very nice.....
event in a country like swiss that before i went to basel (swiss area with a most of population are germany) many of french friends keep on telling me swiss people are rasis they not nice bla bla...but when i was there..i found people are more more nice than a people here....event they dare to give u smile when u walking around in the city center...and my friend who living there she is a kind a hard women to have interacted with people but she has no problem at all with swiss people it means quite nice there...and people in germany and swiss they can speak english event not very good but they willing to talk on it when they saw we r foreigner n need a help or need to asking something...

I love the country and the medical systems and human rights its fantastic but the population in general dont appreciate what they have mostly they like to complain and when you really listen to what they complain about ...they really dont know what suffering under the hand of a rulership is.
I dont like the fact that french people are dirty and dont care about the next person ...i hate the spit and dog poo on the streets...thats blooming disgusting and no one tells ppl to pick up shit after their stupid dogs why keep a pet if you cant handle it, its like letting your baby shit on the street thats gross argh. and when you get into a tram...MOVE back other ppl want to enter stop saying pita..I DONT CARE JUST MOVE OVER eish they make me so mad. and the women are the worst of rude seriously when i move a little on the pedestrian i dont mean youre the queen im just being human either say thank you or move a little too so we can both pass. sometimes its hard for me to belive some of the annoying rude people are from this beautiful country.
oh one last one....when talking on your celphone in the bus..keep it down we dont want to hear about your whole life in the tram seriously your stories are so embarrassing goodness me

Sorry Louis, but I think you should unlock your CAP LOCK key first, then go live in France before you make such statements, "High Level Hate" (maybe in the middle east) But you are so far off on the Culture. (modren) France is more 'American" than England. A good example is the McDonalds Corp. makes 32% of their profits in France, Coka Cola is right up there with a 1/3rd of their profits in France. If you were ever here you would see the prefered fashion among young people is Convers High tops, real Levis jeans, popular sports clothing with English graphics and baseball hats, Hip-hop styles, chewing gum and all global fast food corporations and most popular music and movies come from America. I think your grudge or opinion is based on your experience in your own country rather than France. As an Irishman living in France for years, it's clear to me France is loosing it's cultural independence to global corporate marketing efforts and they are happily surrendering to it.

ACCORDINGLY INTERNET HISTORY STUDY I'VE DONE, ENGLAND HAS BEEN A MAJOR PLAYER ON WORLDWIDE COMMERCIAL SINCE '17 CENTURY. ENGLAND INFLUENCE ON LATIN AMERICA, MIDDLE EAST AND EVEN ON CHINA IS VERY NOTED. ENGLAND WAS RESPONSIBLE TO FINANCE SEVERAL WARS WORLDWIDE BEECAUSE THEIR COMMERCIAL INTEREST BENEFIFTS. THIS CAN BE EASILY FOUND INTO INTERNET. IT HAS CREATED SOME HIGH LEVEL HATE AGAINST ENGLISH AND "AMERICAN" PEOPLE. AS YOU MENTIONED ABOVE THEY DON'T TAKE IN CONSIDERATION OTHER CULTURES. HOWEVER FRECH TOOK THE ADVANTAGE OF AMERICAN/ENGLAND BUSINESS TO EXPORT IT'S FASHION ADN LIFE CULTURE TRADITION. FRNECH IS LOVED BY SEVERAL COUNTRIES AND THE FRENCH FOLK SHOULD TAKE IN CONSIDERATION THAT THEY ARE PART OF EMOTION AND INSPIRATION FOR SEVERAL WORLDWIDE PEOPLE. SAYING THAT, THE LANGUAGE DOES NOT MATTER AND FRENCH PEOPLE SHOULD USE ENGLISH AS A "TOOL" ONLY TO BETTER SUPPORT THEIR COMMUNICATION AND LIFE STYLE THAT MANY FOLK WORLDWIDE LOVE.....

    Bonjour Robert!

Always send mail certified when you want to cancel anything.
It is the only way to keep the Insurance fraudsters honest.

    Good luck!

It's very difficult for an American to really warm up to France or to live in France. Americans do not stand in "lines" like robots or walk into people as the French do. We are not afraid of talking to strangers or being spontaneous. We basically feel excluded as we have nothing in common with the French sourpusses who really are a colony of the USA. Sarko wishes he was born American,so he has spent all of his time as President making France more American, thereby dismantling French culture.

The things I do like about France are their Medical System, Public Transportation, Tele-Internet Communications, and the general polite and helpful attitudes of the common people when you request their help.

The food markets in Paris are all overpriced and even more so depending on which market you attend. So much for "solidarity". All the fish, for example, is brought in frozen from abroad, so nothing is ever "fresh", and most of the food is processed with fluoridated salt. The average meal is really a hamburger with french fries in France just like in the USA.

My feelings about France has nothing to do with the French language versus speaking English. Few speak French worldwide, so this just makes the French less competitive since they refuse to learn English. Globalization is about American capitalism, and the French are on their last leg of socialism, except of course, all the debts created by the banksters will be socialized and dumped onto the plates of the taxpayer.

Knowing France means knowing of your war like history, your discriminatory attitudes towards anyone who is "different", your lack of trust or ability to love deeply with only "contracts" giving you the certainty you carve, your collaboration with the Nazi's, your stifling educational system, and your lack of economic freedom to give your property to anyone upon death that you choose.
The French state is God & King conveniently rolled into one. Religion is frowned upon, 40% of the children are born out of wedlock, and only 50 marriages occur for every 10,000 citizens. There is no love in the City of Lights, only contracts!

The total lack of Customer Service and the forced paying for services that were rotten requires Internationalist to spend most of their money outside of France every chance they get.

Besides food and medical care, I personally buy nothing in overpriced France. Instead I just phone the USA and order, charge and send. It's a perfect solution to long hours in the Paris metro going to crapy stores. The same products in the USA will cost less than half as much. There, if you don't like something, it can easily be returned with a smile from the sales clerk and your money given back.

The euro is doomed, and the French will all be piled into a holding pen with all the other Europeans and made to pay for all the debts of those they never knew. They will do as their bosses and owners require, as they all are still following "the rules".

We know the French are all walking down "Route 41" to get those pensions for 41 long, boring years under a hierarchical, civilian military regime. They love no one except "the rules". All are married only to France. There is no romance or real love in the country.
    There isn't even any fun!

We are used to economic freedom, love, marriage, and fun!
France placed 64th in the Index of Economic Freedom
http://www.heritage.org/Index/Ranking. Everyone is so serious that no one can have any fun here.

This is what I really hate about France, Insurance!
Normally I am a fairly positive person until this week. I am being held hostage by AXA Insurance. My last payment is due in Fev. 2011. I sent a cancellation notice in Oct. My agent that is down the street sent me a letter saying it was too late to cancel. His letter was post marked Nov 2nd. 2010, I got it on Dec. 7th. 2010 Why does it always takes this guy 30 days to get his mail delivered a couple of hundred meters. I can get a regular letter to Paris from Narbonne in two days. I suspect he uses a stamp machine and sits on his out bound mail for a month just so it is impossible to cancel. I had three policies with AXA I have managed to get my auto canceled and now I have to wait until next year to try again to cancel the Health/Sante and the Building policies I have. Never buy anything from AXA unless you never want to switch agents in your entire life. Yes I will continue to tell everyone I meet to never, never, never do business with AXA.

Sure.. many French people don't speak English and insist on speaking French with foreigners but isn't that also the same way when foreigners go to English speaking countries??

Sorry but as an anglophone myself I'm only too aware that we in general are quite lazy when it comes to languages.. or at least English speakers have the advantage of knowing that anywhere in the world you go, someone around speaks English. I also see this is a disadvantage or at least as a loss of opportunity from our side.

The only true way to learn a foreign language is through necessity and once you climb that huge mountain of feeling stupid and awkward and stumbling over your limited vocabulary... it's a wonderful feeling and so worth it ;)
