Living costs in Germany

Posted in Germany forum

What are the living costs in Germany, especially concerning food and rental prices (in larger cities like Frankfurt)?
How much do I have to calculate per month?

Hi everyone, just wanna ask, how about living expenses in Darmstadt as compared to Berlin?

Wow thank u very much Dora. So for students, do you think 700 Euros per month is enough for living in Berlin? (rent an apartment, food, etc) I have a friend (a student) in Essen, he said that his living cost per month is 400-450 Euros (but he lives in dormitories)

Food, transport etc. are also more expensive in Munich, though the difference is not that much. As for salaries, these are also higher in Munich, and unemployment is a lot lower.

What most people don't know is that Berlin is actually one of the cheapest cities of Germany. Although it is the capital, it is economically completely underdeveloped which is reflected in the cost of living. This is due to the fact that both East and West Berlin were very dependent on subsidies before the German reunification, and later on never quite caught up economically. There is no real industry in Berlin except for government up to today.

As for the cost of living for students, this means that you can enjoy one of the most vibrant European cities at relatively little cost (i.e. a fraction of Paris, Rome, London or similar cities).

What?!? Twice?? Wow, so unexpected for me, since Berlin is the capital, I thought the difference won't be that much. Is it also valid for the food, transport, etc? (that Munchen is more expensive) How about salary? which one gives a better income?

Munich is a lot more expensive than Berlin. In Berlin you can get a 1 bedroom apartment for around 300 Euros per month. In Munich you should expect to pay twice as much!

Hello everyone.... Just wanna ask, which one is more expensive (From the prices of food, average cost for rent a 1 bedroom apartment): Berlin or Muenchen? by how much approximately?

Which cities do also belong to the "bigger cities" in Germany?? Because compared to where I live in Mexico, e.g. Frankfurt doesn't seem that big to me ;)

I agree with Daniel. In the bigger cities of Germany, you need at least some 1500 Euros per month to live a decent live, at least if you want to have your own apartment...

How do you manage to live on a 1000€ per month? In Frankfurt, you almost pay this just for a decent flat?

In my case the living costs in Germany are much higher than in Mexico (I already expected that).
I already heard a lot of weird stuff about the German food...I'm really excited what's expecting me there ;)

And yes, the German language is one of my biggest problems! Rita, if you want to learn it, take a lot of time and patience ;)
