Thinking of Moving to Zakynthos, Greece

Posted in Greece forum

I've lived out in Chicagoland Area all my life and only went to Zakynthos when I was little but lately have been thinking about going for a long visit and maybe staying there.
Any thoughts?

Thassos is a lovely place and definitely one of my favourite islands. It is plush and green and not very full of tourists - a real plus. A gem of an island.

Just be mindful that it is a much less populated island and therefore it is always harder to find jobs and things in places like these (although the ferry connection to the port of Kavala on the mainland is really good).

Like Kostas says, always check the place out first before making any life-changing decisions. Unless you have money up front, moving to an island is better when it's bigger, such as Evia or Crete.

Hope this helps a little :)

    Hi Max,

Kostas is right, it is best to go there first to see whether it really is the sort of thing that you can settle into.

Greece, like most of the world at the moment (England is the same), is suffering from a financial crisis, jobs are not easy to get and life is that much harder.

Saying that, Greece is a beautiful country and has a much more relaxed pace than places like USA and England. London in comparison, for instance, is a stress bucket.

Whatever you do, don't make the mistake of assuming you know what it's like there before you even get to the airport. Check the place out first and observe the minuses as well as the pluses.

    All the best,

    Rob

    Hi,
it looks like a huge change in your way of living if you really do it. Zakynthos is a great place to live if you like a relaxed life, nice scenery and sea.
I believe coming first for a visit, like you thinking, checking how things are is your best option.
You should also take under consideration the financial crisis here, that makes living here harder(at least for now), though US is having similar problems from what i read.

Anyway, check it out first before you make your choises!

    Take care
