What determines how long I can stay in India?

Posted in India forum

Hello! I am living in Bangalore, India to study abroad for the semester. I arrived August 25th, 2016 and my visa lasts until January 20th, 2017, but my residence permit is only valid until December 31st, 2016. I was not aware that the residence permit could last shorter than my planned stay, which I had planned to be until January 3rd, 2017. I cannot afford another flight, so I'm freaking out that I could be in a lot of trouble if I can't find a way to leave by December 31st!!! I thought I had to leave the country when my residence permit expired, but then I read here that the visa determines how long you are able to stay and not the residence permit. So, which is it? Is it safe to stay until January 3rd or will I get into trouble? I plan on working in India in the future, so I don't want to ruin my standing with the country and risk not being able to return in the future! Thanks!

    Hi,
    Good morning.

Gr8 to know you are fond of India and plan to work stay n work in India in future. As you are aware you are right now living in Sillicon Valley of India i.e. Bangalore wherein you may find ample career and employment opportunities.
Your case in question is bit extraordinary. Generally one can stay in a country till the visa expires and not till the end of the residence permit. However, in your best interest, it's good to contact Consulate Office and get it cleared before landing in to trouble.

By the way, what are you studying ? Where do you live ? Hey, can u speak some Kannadaa - local language and Hindi - widely spoken language in India ? If not, would u like to improve its skills ?

Pl respond and be in contact. Pl keep me updated too.

    Tc, bye,

    Mukund Chaskar
