What's the best place to live in Italy?

Posted in Italy forum

Can anyone of you tell me what would be a nice place to live in Italy for a while?
I'm thinking about some bigger cities...which ones are nice?

Oh, your story sounds quite awful! I hope to get a room in a shared flat, so that I only have to talk to the guy who's renting the whole flat, not to the landlord directly. I also hope I'll find something nice over the internet or at the address lists at the university or something! We'll see ;)

Hi Anneke, me again. Well I love Rome but VERY expensive! rents are crazy crazy crazy..but it is a fabulous magical city. Hate Naples...dirty chaotic and overcrowed and the traffic...a nightmare...hate Pomiglian d'Arco...dirty rundown they throw garbage on the sides of the highways...poor lonely stray dogs running around everywhere....I like Palermo..cheaper for rent and quite hustling bustling. I presently livei n Trapani and the best thing here is the PEOPLE! rents very cheap..flat in the centre for 350 euros. but...no car kinda boring...I will be leaving soon.

I can tell you that living in Italy is not all it is cracked up to be. for example today i am without water..for over 24 hours. when i moved into this flat i had problems with the electricity...and never sign rental contracts in italian if you don't understand them. i have run into a rather deceptive twit of a realtor here.

and depending on where you go...you will probably have to waste one months on paying a commision to a rental agency to find you a flat. seems many italians not so used to renting the places directly over the internet.

    hope this helps!

    Ciao Sonia:

I am new to the site, but I have been wanting to come down to the Lecce area for quite some time to see whether I would like to live there. Since you live there and you work in properties, maybe we can chat about meeting?

    Thanks, Nicoletta

Thanks Davide, your information is way better than wikipedia ;)
I heard of Frances of Assisi (there is a school named after him somewhere), but I didn't know where the town itself is located.

Unfortunately I don't know the series Don Matteo. But nice that you're kind of a part of the setting ;)

Ciao Anneke. Have you heard of the town of Assisi where Frances of Assisi is from? Well Perugia is just 20 minutes away from Assisi. Assisi was the first place I went to upon arriving in Perugia. Una citta bellisima con la chiesa di San Francesco on the hill. What a spectacular view from up there.

Perugia is the capitol of Umbria la cuore verde della Italia.
The Green Heart of Italy. The region of Umbria is just right below the region of Tuscany.(capitol of Tuscany is of course Florence) Many people like Umbria better because it has less tourists my comparison to Tuscany.

I flew into Rome and then took a nice 3 hour train ride to Perugia. Passed the whole time on the train speaking Italian to the nicest young ladies had ever met. The train ride seemed more like only an hour and half.

While in Perugia on the week-ends I travelved to Spoleto, Spello, Gubbio, Todi, Terni, Orvieto, Assisi, Foligno, San Marino, Florence, San Leo, Lago di Trasimeno(4th largest lake in Italy), Piacenza and more.
The train and bus service in Italy is molto buono.

A proposito, Gubbio is the city where the TV series Don Matteo was filmed.
I've got 12 episodes of that televion program on 3 DVDs. It's all in Italian. Can recognize all those places on the show because I was there. Use to watch that program in my apartment in Perugia. So it's special to me.

Hi Davide! Never heard of Perugia! But as you say they have a university there and it's a great city, I'll check it out ;)
    Have a nice day

Last year spent over a month in Perugia. Rented an apartment and went to the Universita di Perugia taking classes in advanced converasation, Italian history and culture.

If the whole country of Italy only had Perugia it would be a great place.
So historical with the Itruscans, Romans e cosi via.

I lived for 2 years in Vicenza in the region of Veneto. Near by is Verona the city of Romeo and Guilieta. Verona is the best secondo me.

Recently I read that Siena is the best city in Italy to live in.
