Is Italian a difficult language to learn for Dutch people?

Posted in Naples forum

I would like to learn Italian and I was wondering whether Dutch people can learn the language easily. Italian is a Roman language and is derived from Latin (the same with Spanish, French and Portuguese). How long does it take to have a good speaking level? Thanks for any help.

Well I'm not Dutch but English (and we're terrible at languages) but I find learning Italian reasonably ok. It's the trying to understand what people speaking in dialect are trying to say that is the tricky part, especially here in Naples. I think in a couple of months you can manage to get by and a few more months you can have a decent conversation with someone.
