VoIP in Kuwait?

Posted in Kuwait forum

Is it true that you can't use any VoIP services in Kuwait? How do expatriates talk/see their friends abroad?

Website censorship of a lot of social sites, such as Facebook, puts a lot of burden on the social networks of expats who move to Kuwait. How do you cope?

To me it seems unfair to ask expatriates who have lived abroad and are used to certain freedoms to be thus restricted.

Actually, I have no idea about Skype & the provider - I don't use it..But, you can call them and inquire about that!

    Have a nice day

    Thanks for the info Sara.

Now this is interesting: I have my personal laptop with me at work with an E-go device connected to it. I have tried opening Skype's website on it, as before, but it shows 'access denied.' So Zain definitely blocks the site.

Now my company computer, which is a desktop, has a different connection and it opens Skype, albeit the Arabic version. Now this is catch 22, since the administrator to our network does not allow other applications installed in office PCs, much less this type. So that means I can open the site but could not run the application.

Wataniya and Zain are both mobile phone operators aside from being internet providers. On the other hand, KEMS is just an internet provider. Is it possible that KEMS allows Skype because KEMS is just an internet provider? Which means that there is no conflict of interest with allowing cheap calls since they are not mobile phone operators anyway?

    Interesting.

I don't know if Skype is available in Kuwait, but I know there's a card for Internet Calls - which you could call from internet to phone (Landline or Cellphone)

Can you explain to everyone how you are able to purchase credits for Skype when the damn site doesn't even open because it is banned? Where do you live,in 'twilight zone'?

You don't have to answer that because we know you don't have an answer. And stop being a cry-baby ^_^

    Finito.

i think v shud leave the discussion as it is shifting into a rift now. our objective here definitely is not fighting rather to facilitate each other by sharing our experiences being expats.
i will say this last time very humbly, if it can help, that i opened skype account here in kwt, still using it for skype-to-skype calls (of course free) and for landline/mobile numbers (of course buying credit for this).
now if u dont agree then pls leave the discussion.
    cheers

How do pay for mobile/landline calls if you can't open an account therefore able to purchase credits? If you cannot explain that then you're a liar.

Mobile and landline calls are cheap but they are not free.

i dont want to get into ur techy things but wat i know is very simple.
i created skype account in kuwait, downloaded the softwere here, bought credit here and called cells/land numbers from kuwait...............simple.
now u can talk some more jargons but bottom line will not change.
try to focus on solution, dont discuss problems which are not related.

Downloading Skype from its website is different from downloading it from a peer to peer site or any other file sharing site. For starters, you won't be able to open an account where you can buy credits to call cell/land phones because that transaction is SSL encrypted.

Try and focus on understanding the issues.

    Shakib A,

The subject of this thread is: VOIP in Kuwait - in which the thread starter wanted to know if VOIP was BANNED in Kuwait. Anyone with a Rapidshare subscription knows that you could download almost anything in Kuwait - it's only 9 euros a month.

If you want to start a thread about whether Skype could be downloaded in Kuwait, please feel free to do so. But next time, get your facts right.
