VoIP in Kuwait?

Posted in Kuwait forum

Is it true that you can't use any VoIP services in Kuwait? How do expatriates talk/see their friends abroad?

Website censorship of a lot of social sites, such as Facebook, puts a lot of burden on the social networks of expats who move to Kuwait. How do you cope?

To me it seems unfair to ask expatriates who have lived abroad and are used to certain freedoms to be thus restricted.

Downloading and installing Skype is not the prob. It's when you get to the part when you want to pay them so you could call cellphone 'x' in lala-land is the prob. This requires you to log into their site open your account and put some folouse as credits - that page will not open because the site is banned.

You reckon I should give some cash to a bunch of guys huh? Lol, that would be a cold day in hell.

    Hey milespacker,

You dont neccessarily use your credit card. there are a bunch of guys who activate a profile with some credit in it. you pay them in cash n just change password and continue to use. on the otherside, you can use skype. read above how to go about downloading it.

Yes there are thousands of fly-by-night VOIP operators. Withdrawal or service is the least of the negative things that could happen to you and your credit card. That is why it makes sense to subscribe to reliable providers like Skype. Unfortunately it is banned in Kuwait. Yes, you could download the program from other sites but it's limited to PC to PC calls.

There are thousands of voip applications available on internet. The ones johni selvan mentioned are popular but not reliable. Many of these offer free calls to landlines in UK and US. Hence you can reap the benfits irrespective of whether they withdraw services or not.
Milespaker, skype.com is blocked but not the skype application. you could download from any download site. 4shared.com,download.com etc...But skype, yahoo calls very expensive compared to the ones we have talked bout earlier. My best bet is you can have either skype/yahoo as back up and continue with the cheaper ones.

I have no clue why some guys are saying social sites are blocked.Facebook and orkut are very much alive.

@George, i am dumping atleast 100 gb usingg torrents. everything is alive. you could have any content downloaded. there is no way to regulate this. afterall it a p2p sharing. Only concern is some of the useful sites are blocked. and some isps are very good at blocking the proxy sites.

what i remember, a friend of mine told me about Nymgo. according to him Nymgo offers very competetive rates for calling within GCC (UAE, Saudia, Bahrain etc). as i have many friends working in GCC i was thinking to try it.
thanx, u gave a useful tip. i will double check with my friend and will get back on that.
    cheers

In retrospect, Nymgo, the VOIP that I used before, might have been a scam. It exploits the VOIP service vaccum that Skype is not able to fill in GCC countries. It entices you to sign up and open an account that you put credit into and then vanishes with subcribers' money.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nymgo was run by the same peeps running Jumblo. . etc. No doubt they will employ the same MO.

BitTorrent, Rapidshare, Pirate Bay. . . are ok. Hi-5 is blocked, LinkedIn is ok. In my view blocking VOIP is more of making local telecom companies make more $, which makes it what, worse?

Personally, I don't mind that most social networking sites are blocked. Facebook waste a lot of my time already as it is anyway.

It seems unfair to block social networking sites like Tagged. People only want to connect with one another, and they're only fueling Facebook's domination of web networking. (Just to double check: is LinkedIn blocked? That is actually a useful site)

What about sites like Pandora and Hulu? And something like BitTorrent is definitely out?

try jumblo messenger, Action VOIP or smart VOIP. these are all good in quality and cheap in price.

I see now what is wrong. Skype is ok as long as it is PC to PC. I can do that with Yahoo YM so that's no problem. Up until around 5 months ago, I was using this VOIP program called Nymgo, it enabled me to call land lines and cellphones for very cheap. Then all of a sudden, the site just vanished taking around $15 credit that I had in my account. It also happened to a couple of guys at work.

The only reason I would use Skype is if I could call cellphones and mobiles worldwide but the site where you pay by paypal or credit card ( www.skypeout.com) to put credit in your registered account is blocked. So I don't need Skype, I'd just stick to yahoo YM PC to PC.

Facebook is fine, but they blocked Tagged.
