Breathe Deep Michigan is a grassroots event that began in metro Detroit in 2008 and has since raised more than $730,000 for lung cancer research, education, and support programs. In addition to the walk and fun run, the event recognizes lung cancer survivors in the local community; honors loved ones lost to lung cancer; and provides hope to lung cancer patients and their families.

“My mom, Holly, was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer on December 23, 2011,” recalls Brie Hesano, a Breathe Deep Michigan volunteer who has participated in the event since 2012. “We were overwhelmed by shock, then fueled by hope. That spring we joined the Breathe Deep Michigan walk, and mom named our team HOLLY’S HOT TAMALES (“Holly Holly Hot Tamale” was a nickname of hers from college). With over 50 friends and family by our side, mom completed the 3-mile walk on her own, even while undergoing chemo treatments. A few months later, after eight courageous months fighting, she lost her battle on August 14, 2012.

"My mom was taken from us way too soon. Lung cancer robbed us of so much. She passed when I was pregnant with my daughter Hailey—she would have been the most amazing Grandma. It is unbearable to think about all the memories she would have made with her now 5 grandchildren! This is why Holly’s Hot Tamales continues to raise money and walk in Breathe Deep Michigan each year: in honor of our mom, grandma, sister, and friend.”
