Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 - a musical pick and mix of emotions and energy

Today this work is more usually performed by specialist chamber choirs but this concert, accompanied by Marches Baroque Orchestra, will be a chance to hear it performed on a much larger scale. You will need only a little imagination to conjure the thrilling impact of the famous D-major opening when chanted by some 130 voices over the triumphant renaissance fanfare.

Composed as Claudio Monteverdi’s calling card for ‘the big job’, maestro di cappella of St Mark’s in Venice, the work has gradually become a mainstay of the choral repertoire, perhaps the earliest large-scale piece for which this can be said.

Monteverdi’s Vespers creates a musical journey, from the mystical to the prayerful, from the happy and exultant to the angry and, surprisingly for a fundamentally liturgical work, even the sensual.

The soloists in the concert are Aoife Miskelly, Gwendolen Martin, Gwilym Bowen, Guy Cutting, David Ireland, and Tim Murphy. The period instrument orchestra Marches Baroque will be conducted by Geraint Bowen.
