Nietzsche Circle, a NY-based nonprofit dedicated to studying the life and works of the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche. Every month, we present a new leading scholar in the field. This month we present Dr Babette Babich, Professor of Philosophy at Fordham University. Dr Babich will present a talk entitled--

Nietzsche's Dionysian Dithyrambs

This lecture offers an exploration of the alien power and force of music in the interplay between the Apollonian and the Dionysian in The Birth of Tragedy, reflecting both religious folk culture and the lyric poet, Archilochus, "the first recognizable musician," as Nietzsche tells us. Retracing contemporary reflections on Nietzsche and music, Nietzsche's Dionysian Dithyrambs, effectively transpose Greek into German. Thereby, Nietzsche's focus on the music not alongside but and much rather in the word, may illuminate the rebirth of tragedy out of the spirit of music.
