Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States, yet suicide can be prevented. Volunteers from the St. Louis region are joining the thousands of people who are gathering in towns across the United States to promote suicide prevention. The annual St. Louis Out of the Darkness Community Walk, hosted by the AFSP-Missouri Chapter will be held on Sunday, September 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at Creve Coeur Lake Park.

This gathering will support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s education, research and survivor support programs. In addition to raising awareness and funds to fight suicide, the walks give those who attend a chance to connect with others and know they are not alone, whether they walk in memory or in support of a loved one or in honor of their own mental health journey.

The St. Louis Out of the Darkness Community Walk is one of more than 550 Out of the Darkness Overnight, Community, and Campus Walks being held nationwide this year. The walks are expected to unite more than 300,000 walkers and raise millions for suicide prevention efforts. In 2021, AFSP walks raised over $21 million for suicide prevention. More than 6,000 people participated in the St. Louis Walk last year, raising nearly $250,000.
Attendees will walk on their own schedule from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Activities and resources include:
Honor Bead Ceremony recognizing the reasons people walk
Washington University’s Suicidal Thoughts and Actions Research in Kids (STARK) research team
Gizmo's Pawsome Guide to Mental Health, a read-along story
Bugles Across America, Dove Release, and Bagpipers
Paws for Prevention booth and raffle
