One of the finest science fiction films of the 1950s and a precursor for many cinematic space voyages to come, TOM’s Film Club screens Forbidden Planet.

A film which has long endured as one of the finest science fiction films of the 1950s, along with Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Day the Earth Stood Still, as well as a precursor for many cinematic space voyages to come.

Directed by Fred M. Wilcox, the film follows Space Commander John J. Adams as he journeys to the largely unexplored planet Altair-4 in search of a previous expedition which went missing many decades prior. Upon arriving to this new and mysterious world, he encounters the brilliant but arrogant Dr. Morbius, his daughter Altaira, their versatile metallic servant Robby the Robot, but no other signs of life, with the reasons soon becoming clear. Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s The Tempest and starring Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis and a pre-Airplane! and Naked Gun Leslie Nielsen, Forbidden Planet boasts some superb monster effects (created by Disney animators), the first all electronic musical soundscape in film history, and overall an extraordinary scale unmatched by many films of its era, and still continues to impress and influence audiences to this day.

“For this fanciful interstellar planet, which has been dreamed up at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and put on the screen in Eastman color and properly spacious CinemaScope, is the gaudiest layout of gadgets this side of a Florida hotel. It offers some of the most amusing creatures conceived since the Keystone cops.” Bosley Crowther, The New York Times
