Seventh Species presents soprano Hsin Yi Lin & pianists Asya Gulua, Myrna Setiawan & Kaori Noland performing songs and solo piano works by composer Gary Noland, including several world premieres.

Seventh Species Contemporary Classical Music Concert Series presents soprano Hsin Yi Lin and pianists Asya Gulua, Myrna Setiawan, and Kaori Noland in performances of songs & solo piano works by Portland composer Gary Noland. This recital consists primarily of world premieres of settings for soprano & piano of poems by renowned novelist, essayist, and poet Alexander Theroux from his Collected Poems (Fantagraphics, 2015). Theroux, whose novel Darconville's Cat, was nominated for the National Book Award and listed in Goodreads as one of the Top 100 Literary Novels of all time, has given composer Noland carte blanche to set whatever poems he wishes, which the composer has taken as an honor and a blessing. Pianists Myrna Setiawan and Kaori Noland will perform several of Noland's solo piano works. The composer is dedicating this recital as a memorial to his beloved piano and composition teacher Goodwin Sammel (1925-2020), with whom he remained in touch after his studies with him in the early to late 1970s. Founder of the contemporary classical music concert series SEVENTH SPECIES (now in its 30th year) and one of the original founding members of CASCADIA COMPOSERS, Noland has been a fixture in the Portland metro area for upwards of fifteen years. His music has been heard (in performance and in broadcast) on at least four continents. Six CDs of his compositions are available from NORTH PACIFIC MUSIC. His 77-hour long graphically scored text piece “JAGDLIED: a Chamber Novel for Narrator, Musicians, Pantomimists, Dancers & Culinary Artists” was listed as the Number One Book of 2018 by Amy’s Bookshelf Reviews and is available for purchase on Amazon (under his pen name Dolly Gray Landon).
