I don't get why people think New York is so special.

Come on be realistic guys!
It's dirty, there is too many people, everybody is stressed, there is noise everywhere, it's not safe at all and it's just some concrete!!!
I don't know where is the magic in this... Americans have just constructed the worse city ever!

I will start out by saying that...the poster does have a point.

NYC is a place that you have to live in for a while to enjoy: you have to know your way around, know the culture, and have connections to know when events are happening. If you just visit or live here for a few months without knowing much, NYC can be a terrible experience.

To be completely honest - because so many people are willing to pay cringe-inducing rental prices, NYC is turning into something that only rich people can really enjoy. There are amazing places to live (for example, a place called Park Slope which is here in Brooklyn), but they require tons of money in rent ($1600-$2000 a month for a small 1 bed!!). I live in the lower part of Brooklyn where the rents are "cheap" - $1200 a month and the "culture" is Asian with smatterings of 3rd and 4th generation Italians, and a decent amount of Mexicans, Eastern Europeans, and some South Americans.

I think one of the major draws of NYC for a lot of people, specifically non-assimilated Americans (immigrants that haven't quite lost their original culture) is that you can basically live in a microcosm of your original culture and yet still be immersed in American culture...so people feel comfortable, and yet can branch out a bit. This works well if you ALREADY have a culture here. So Italians live with Italians, Chinese with Chinese, Eastern Europeans with Eastern Europeans, Mexicans with Mexicans...etc..., BUT, if you do not, or it's hard to find (such as French, British, English, Swiss - any western European country really) you're going to probably not feel as "at home" here.

That's why you'll see English, French, and other Enlightened :) Western Europeans that just really dislike NYC, or America in general really, but (as above with the Nigerian and the Mexican) others love it.

I met a French girl here and we started talking and some of the first things out of her mouth were complaints. Not a good way to introduce yourself to a native of the country! She was staying with a Korean couple in Queens. Queens can be a rather laid back, homogenous, place that is far removed from typical Manhattan. She was also staying with a bunch of French people, which probably isn't good for cultural immersion.

My biggest complaint in living here is the prices for everything! We were living comfortably in Philadelphia - $650 rent, $930 a YEAR for full coverage auto insurance, decent taxes, no need to take a train everywhere...Now our expenses have exploded. Almost DOUBLE the rent, DOUBLE the car insurance, high taxes, high cost of food. I wonder where all of the money goes?! I always see people walking around with EBT (Food Stamp) cards and I'm about ready to just hang my head in shame and apply for one. Other people seem to be getting my taxes but I get no benefit!

Is not about the beauty of the city, is about how many things you have in one tinny Island. Parades, free concerts, The Best Restaurants and Clothing stores in the world. The diversity of neighborhoods, shows, clubs, IT IS VERY SAFE!, etc...
It's not a perfect city, because it doesn't exist a perfect city! But.... It is The Best city in the World!
If you don't like it.... Don't you come!
