Hi there! My daugther is thinking of studying in the Netherlands and I am trying to figure out which budget she will need. Do you think that some 800 Euros will be enough for a student over there (including rental cost)?

This definitely depends on the city, Frank. If she goes to a small university town this should be fine. If she goes to Amsterdam 800 Euros might be tight (calculate at least 400 Euros for a room in a shared flat already)

hi...I've one question to U, what about medical insurance? If I will come to Netherlands....for example to Amsterdam where i should go to register like a citizen with medical attetion. It means - if I will broke my leg and I will go to the hospital....what I should have ( what kind of paper and where I should register first ) to get help from hospital? There is something like that? regards :)
what about a job?

your daughter will just study in holland?
no plans about getting a job too? some students also have a job...i'm wondering if you can make it: studying and working while living alone in a foreign country.
sounds scary.

hi frank,
depending on in which city your daughter is planing to study the rent will vary significantly! amsterdam is a very expensive place to live for example. however, the respective uni might provide student accomodation or help with a student discount for health insurance. my uni even gave us a list of average expenses in brussels.
I found this on the internet - looks realistic to me.
Experience shows that to live and study in the Netherlands for one year costs a student €700-1,000 a month. Some students manage to spend less, but this of course depends on your own lifestyle. An indication of likely expenses is given below.
Monthly expenses
Rent for housing: €450
Food: €350
Insurance: €40
Public transport: €50
Books: €50
Other costs: €60
Total: €1,000You cannot count on finding a source of additional income after you arrive and, unless you are from an EU member state, your opportunities to work are restricted.
Regards, Virginie
