Back in the day in the Ozarks, when a family or local institution like a school or church needed help, a Pie Supper was one answer. Community women made a simple meal, then added fancy pies and cakes to be auctioned off for dessert. A cakewalk happened and other country contests where people bid to determine the winner. (This still happens in some high schools to pick the class king and queen and to raise money for the prom.) There was home-grown music, and always, a live pie auctioneer. Husbands or boyfriends bid on their spouse's or girlfriend's creations. No one went home hungry and the money went to a good cause.
The St. Clair Historical Museum, (a local 501 © 3) is recreating this tradition on Saturday, June 10, at the St. Clair Elks' Hall, 35 North Street in St. Clair, Missouri, to benefit the museum in lieu of a modern banquet. Doors open at 4 p.m., Dinner served at 5 p.m., with the dessert auction at 6:30 p.m. There will also be a silent basket auction.
Master of Ceremonies will be Eric (Rick) Mansfield of Ellington, Missouri. Mr. Mansfield comes from deep in the Ozarks to show us how it's done—he has conducted numerous such events helping families after the breadwinner passed, or a house burned. Music will be furnished by Josiah Sikes, a young fiddle-guitar-mandolin player who comes well recommended by Spike Huff, his instructor.
“This may be the first time in 50 years that such an authentic pie supper has been held so close to St. Louis,"Mansfield said. “I commend the Museum for doing something with 19th Century roots, in keeping with their historical mission
