Women' History Month is particularly poignant this year. As a recent UN report makes clear, women and girls have been disproportionately disadvantaged by the Covid-19 pandemic - exposing structural inequalities across every sphere, from health to the economy, security to social protection. But there are positive elements to every crisis, and the explosion of women's artistic output is one of them. Despite the current uncertainty about venue opening, the response to Alternative Arts annual celebration of women's history, creativity and achievements in East London has been immense. Contemporary women artists, activists, writers and performers, women's groups and community organisations and institutions across East London have come together to present an exceptional programme of exhibitions, activism and events. See the full programme at www.alternativearts.org.uk and be sure to participate this year.

Women in Literature
Highlights of the literary programme include 'New Suns' a feminist literary festival at the Barbican Centre (5-7 March) that explores the legacy of eminent science-fiction writer Octavia Butler. Writers include poet Shamim Azad leading a workshop aimed at producing verse for children challenging gender role stereotypes. The British Bangladeshi Poetry Collective run an online workshop around the 2021 theme for International Women's Day - #ChooseToChallenge.

Women at Work
