Why does Singapore need compulsory national service?

I was wondering, why Singapore despite its size needs one of the most advanced military forces in East Asia? What do you think, is it nowadays still necessary to have two-year compulsory National Service, which every able-bodied male (both Singapore citizen and permanent resident) has to undertake? What are your opinions on that?

  What has size got to do with the need for defending one's country. It does not mean that if you are small you succumb to your aggressors demands.
