On the Shoulders of Giants: Arab Women in Music

The event seeks to raise public awareness of classic and contemporary genres of Arab music, showcase seldom heard instruments in Western music, and spotlight contributions of women to this ancient heritage. One featured vocalist, Hela Melki, joins the group from Tunisia. She is a finalist from The Voice – a TV production from Beirut, Lebanon. A pre-concert reception begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Laurie Auditorium lobby, featuring local artists and exhibits of art and fashion from the Middle East.

Michael Ibrahim explains the WHY of this performance in the following statement. "The concert speaks of the contributions of Arab women to the arts. It is a direct contradiction to the current narrative that is offered in the mainstream media, or a narrative that is based on the assumptions of how a culture works. Through simple facts and presentation, this concert highlights the accomplishments of Arab women in the arts, shows the tremendous impact women have had on artistic culture in the Arab world, all while presenting the music at the highest level possible."
