The Science of Consciousness
Beach Blanket Babylon
19-23 Bethnal Green Road, London E1 6LA, United Kingdom Plan
Consciousness, as the platform for our experiences, is responsible for the most intimate and meaningful aspects of our existence. Philosophy has for centuries grappled with questions of consciousness, such as whether our minds are separate from our bodies, if our sense of subjectivity is a unique, unavoidable feature of consciousness, and, more recently, whether we are just a kind of computer. I will argue that such debates hardly ever moved us forward, but that the science of consciousness, which I research, is making rapid dramatic progress, and is starting to unlock perhaps the most important mystery remaining in biological science.
I will outline the psychology of consciousness, of how it is surprisingly limited, and yet despite this it is responsible for our most advanced forms of learning. I will also discuss how the brain generates consciousness, how we are now able to quantify the extent of consciousness via brain signals. I will end by outlining my theory of consciousness, that it is an ideas factory, evolutionarily crafted to give rise to our most innovative thoughts.
