Santa Margarita is quite friendly and it takes around 10 minutes driving to get to the border, half an hour on the bus - it cost 1 euro one way, Taxi about 8 euros.
If you have facebook take a look at 'Rentals La Linea' and 'Makana Property'. They could be useful.
La Linea is not really nice but if you don't want to spend too much time on getting to work every day that could be a better option. Accommodation is quite cheap there and there are plenty of flats available just outside the border.
