Why is it so hard to make friends in Switzerland??

Pubblicato in Svizzera forum

Is it just me or is it really hard to find some people in Switzerland who are willing to make good friends with you (especially to foreigners)??
I've been there for only 6 months and I heard you need at least 3 months to completely settle down there so maybe I've been there just too short...what do you think?

but here i think the motto is every man/woman for himself/herself they care about about themselves more then other people, and i dont blame them.. nor complaining. an it depends on the region you're living in i guess still didn't make any friends yet, i guess it just needs time and patience. well if anyone is willing to meet id be happy to have a coffee with you or something :)

I used to work (not living) in many countries. I'm living in Zürich since about fours years now, and well, here I am, googling "wtf is wrong here". I had many many contacts (and friendships, i guess...) with locals, i shared experiences with expats, and i've build a pretty clear opinion of what the problem is.

A big lack of culture and knowledge about whatever happens outside the tiny country, beside the poor information filtered by the awful educational system and the ridiculous press they usually read....
So... IT IS NOT THEIR FAULT
Imagine to live in a small small rich village... have you ever experienced a provincial environment? well it's pretty much the same. we just have to live that from the wrong side: we are out of the circle. This is the province of the world, guys. A rich spoiled and isolated province.

Generally (and then, superficially) speaking, Swiss people are not trained to process anything new, anything coming from "outside". With foreigners, they just use clichés. Like unfortunately everybody does, but they hardly get rid of them, they can't replace them it with real datas.
So, my friends, you are the American, the English, the German, before you can even say a word. And they will have some problems with your country, your way to live, you, anyway, always. Lack of national identity, they need to be critic with all the world.
obviously, they have cliché about themselves, but surprisingly are all SO POSITIVE.
They repeat the "swiss quality" mantra like a background noise covering the real life, and i guess we all know how mediocrity is the only standard here...
That's why they sound so arrogant, and they probably are, but in a very naive way.

After all, I have some swiss friends, few people extremely illuminated or with a good life experience outside the country (and I'm not talking about three months backpacking in thailand). And they are lovely. But still, it's hard to meet them really often, you have to accept it. I'm not a pushy person, and i'm pretty fine with this way. But if you don't like naive and spoiled people, well, switzerland is not a good place for you, as is not for me.
    Anyway, I don't give up :)

It's hard to make friends with the locals. But you are not alone--the Swiss themselves find it hard to make friends with other Swiss. One Swiss friend of mine told me that during his first week of work at a new company this summer, not one person asked him if he would like to go to lunch. Wow. And my friend is an outgoing, friendly guy. So if you're an expat wondering what you're doing wrong, don't feel bad. To make friends in Switzerland, you need time.

I am reading these forums to try to get a look into the people and life of Switzerland. It seems to me that the Swiss are not racist, but simply proud of their culture and dislike other's cultures. I don't really blame them for that. Here in America our police are beating black kids to death for no reason. Our justice system is screwed. In Mexico most of the country is bullied and basically run by drug cartels. Spain is dying financially, and Greece did die financially and is a great place to go and have sex with an incredibly unwilling debt-slave prostitute from eastern Europe. I could go on and on and on. As I look at places all over the world, the ones that do a good job running their countries often have people that are initially forbidding and prone toward similarity in style and such. Sweden would be a good example. I think that some of the people that post negatively about Switzerland are not being tolerant of the Swiss mindset and culture. I don't think that you understand that they might like it the way they live. If I move to Switzerland, it will be to be Swiss. I will have to pay the costs that they pay to have the cleanliness, security, quality, beauty, and actual democracy that they have. I will have to dumb-down my gregariousness. I will have to be more quiet in public. I will have to clean up a little every hour at a party. I will have to be quieter at home. I will have to tie up my recycled newspaper in twine. I will have to dress like a Swiss man my age. I will have to learn the language. I haven't decided if that's worth it or not, but I'm not going to disrespect this country or their people.

Im from austria/vienna and I live now 1 year in lugano and i had not any problems with new friendship and my italian is realy early stage. I was living for 6 month in zurich too theres much more difficult. Yes swiss people a very proud of the country and the mentality is another but if you study little bit the past and also the politic then you know why.
